How to Get Relief When You Have a High Tolerance to THC

Patients with qualifying conditions for medical marijuana in Louisiana can apply to use cannabis as a medicine, offering an alternative to many traditional pharmaceutical medications.

As you continue to use cannabis as a medicine, your tolerance to THC will increase, leading to less intense effects from the same dosage you had been using.

While there’s no ceiling where cannabis stops working entirely, the diminishing effects can be a positive or a negative experience depending on your symptoms. Someone looking for relief from chronic pain will want the most effective experience, for example, while other patients will want as few psychoactive effects as possible.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about getting relief when you have a high tolerance to THC, products designed for patients with a high tolerance, and look at some ways to help reduce your tolerance to a lower level!

Using Cannabis When You Have a High Tolerance to THC

Your Tolerance Will Eventually Get Higher from Using Cannabis

As you use cannabis products, your body will become more used to getting consistent doses of THC, causing the effects to slowly fall until you increase the dosage.

Unlike many other plants, drugs, and substances, although consistent or increased cannabis use will lead to a higher tolerance, there’s no point at which you can’t get an effective dosage with cannabis, you’ll simply need to increase your dosage or decrease your tolerance.

Patients may choose to decrease or increase their tolerance dosage for a variety of reasons such as budget, preference, or convenience, and there’s no right or wrong way to approach it.

Many patients choose to have a higher tolerance to cannabis in order to use certain cannabis products with less intense effects.

For example, patients who use concentrates such as wax or Rick Simpson Oil may want to get to a high tolerance as soon as possible to prevent the high amounts of THC in these products from being too intense.

Products for Patients With a High Tolerance to THC

If you’ve found yourself at a point where the normal dosage of cannabis that you have regularly used isn’t providing the effects you’re looking for, it may be time to increase the dosage or look at some different products.

Taking a higher dosage or doubling down on when you dose can be an effective way to produce the desired results, though this does have a limit at some point because of the cost and time associated with this method.

Most patients choose to increase the amount of THC in their products and look for higher THC content in cannabis flower, concentrates, and high-THC tinctures.

Concentrates are favored for their high potency and offer a much higher amount of THC, as well as more THC per dose. 1 gram of concentrates can have as much as 99% THC, and less than a rice-sized dab can be more potent than an entire joint, making concentrates the go-to for patients with a high tolerance.

Can You Reduce Your Tolerance to THC?

How to Reset Your Tolerance to THC

Your tolerance doesn’t stay at one spot for too long, though you might not notice it in any way until it’s significantly altered.

Reducing your tolerance to THC is simple, and there are two ways you can reduce or reset your tolerance to THC.

The first, and obvious way, is to stop using cannabis until your tolerance is lower.

Most people find that 14 – 30 days of no cannabis use is enough time to completely reset your tolerance, though it will be specific to your biology, diet, and lifestyle.

Taking a tolerance break from cannabis (called a “T Break”) is an easy and simple way to get your tolerance back down to a lower level, allowing you to re-experience cannabis products from the intensity that they were before your tolerance increased.

There are no major withdrawal symptoms or complications with abruptly stopping cannabis use, so you’re safe to start and stop dosing at any rate that makes sense for you.

Reduce Your Tolerance by Slowing Down Dosage Frequency & Reducing THC Intake

If your symptoms or condition requires that you consistently intake cannabis as a medicine, you can slowly reduce your tolerance by decreasing the amount of THC you use (use lower THC products) and the frequency at which you dose cannabis.

Once your tolerance feels lower, switch to products with high-THC content like concentrates and you’ll be back to having the intense effects without completely stopping your cannabis use.

This method takes some experimenting to get down right, though once you have it down, you can incorporate it into your schedule so you’re always rotating your tolerance from medium to high, allowing you to keep experiencing the intense effects while consistently dosing cannabis as a medicine.

There’s also a good deal of subjectivity with this method because everyone will have different biology and natural tolerance to cannabinoids, and your tolerance could increase or decrease at any speed.

Finding the right dosage and THC intake will give you the best experience with cannabis as a medicine and help you achieve a minimum effective dosage.
