How Much THC is Too Much THC?

With Louisiana’s medical marijuana program off to a fresh start in 2022, patients can now browse and shop cannabis flower at approved pharmacies.

Among your choices with cannabis flower, you’ll come across terpene profiles, indicas or sativas, and notably, THC content.

THC content is frequently touted as the “potency factor” of cannabis, and it’s true that the more THC you have, the stronger the effects.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about THC, how much THC you need, and how much THC is too much!

Why Tolerance & THC Go Hand in Hand

THC is Relative to Your Biology!

Although we’ve been researching THC for quite some time, there’s still very little that’s known about why it affects people differently.

One person may respond very well to THC, with enough sensitivity that only a small dosage is required, while someone else may need much more THC to produce a similar level of effects.

Because THC goes to work in the endocannabinoid system found throughout your central nervous system, it’s likely that bio-variability causes some people to need more or less THC for optimal effects.

That makes determining the right amount of THC to use a little complicated, and each person will have to approach THC at their own level.

Where to Start With THC

If you’re dosing cannabis for the first time, you can very easily figure out your effective minimum dosage with nothing more than a little bit of cannabis and a little bit of time.

To find the right dosage size, simply start with the smallest dosage possible and wait until effects have vanished completely before taking another dosage.

Once the effects have faded, increase the dosage by the smallest amount possible and repeat this process until you’ve found a comfortable dose that provides relief and limited downsides for you.

This method is called self-titration, and it’s the best way to determine the right dosage of THC for you.

High TC vs Low THC for Louisiana Cannabis

THC in Cannabis Flower Can Range from 12% - 30%+

Louisiana’s medical marijuana program is still in its infancy, but that’s not stopping cultivators from producing high quality cannabis.

Regular cannabis flower can range from 12% to 30%+ THC, though you’ll often find it sitting in the high teens and mid-twenties at Louisiana pharmacies.

Cannabis flower with less than 15% THC is considered low-THC flower, and this type of cannabis is often found with higher levels of CBD, sometimes in a ratio such as 1:1. Low-THC cannabis flower is the perfect way for new patients, patients with a low tolerance, or patients with additional sensitivity to THC.

Low-THC cannabis flower can also be incorporated into edibles more safely, offering a smoother and lighter experience than using high-THC cannabis flower.

High-THC Cannabis Flower for Potent Effects

High-THC cannabis flower is usually cannabis with 25%+ THC, though new strains are tapping into the high 30’s nowadays.

Cannabis flower with such high THC content will naturally produce more intense effects, and this may be undesirable for someone new to cannabis or for patients who are prone to anxiety when using cannabis.

High-THC cannabis products are designed for patients who have been using cannabis for a long time and have built up a tolerance to THC, so that more THC is required to produce similar effects.

High-THC products like concentrates or RSO which have upwards of 70% THC are particularly effective for managing extreme symptoms like chronic pain, nausea, or PTSD.

Louisiana doesn’t have a cap on its THC content, and in the future when cultivators are operating at their highest level, we could likely see cannabis flower with over 30% THC, and for patients who will inevitably build high tolerances, this will be a great option.
