How Marijuana Can Improve Louisianians’ Overall Health

Louisiana has a whole lot to offer. We’ve got beautiful state parks, Mardi Gras, the best live music, top colleges and universities, and that’s just scratching the surface. Plus, you can get a Louisiana Marijuana Card here!

Unfortunately, one thing we don’t have an outstanding record on is healthcare. In fact, U.S. News and World Report ranks Louisiana 46th in the union for healthcare quality, and we rank “in the bottom third of states in terms of high healthcare affordability burdens.” So we’re paying more than most states for healthcare, and we’re one of the lowest ranked states in healthcare quality.

But remember that bit in the first paragraph about being able to get a Louisiana Marijuana Card? That’s great news, because you can improve your overall health and therefore save money in a number of ways with the help of medical marijuana.

Get the Most Out of Your Workouts With Medical Marijuana

Did you know that medical marijuana can help you get the most out of your workouts?

It’s important to rest between workouts if you want to achieve maximum gains for your efforts, and cannabis can aid in your recovery between exercise sessions.

Workouts put stress on the body and often cause inflammation, but according to Everyday Health, that’s not a bad thing. This damage triggers the body’s immune system, and when your body tissues recover, they come back just a little better they were before the damage. That way, the next time you perform the same workout, you won’t suffer as much damage.

In fact, it’s this cycle of damage and recovery that leads to improved fitness, and that’s a process that cannabis can help you to maximize.

“After a 30- to 40-mile run, I’ll sit down, and my legs will keep throbbing and pounding; it’s like they think they’re still supposed to be going,” Avery Collins, a professional runner, told Men’s Journal. “That’s when the CBD compounds help tremendously. They calm down your legs and, because they’re anti-inflammatory, let them recover faster.”

A study published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine found that marijuana improved athletes’ pain tolerance, which allowed them to benefit from shorter recovery periods and work out more often and vigorously.

“CBD has become part of my all-natural recovery system that I use throughout the day to help with pain and inflammation,” soccer star Megan Rapinoe told Forbes. “Instead of taking Advil or other pain management meds, I've almost exclusively substituted with Mendi CBD products.”

In addition to aiding your recovery after a workout, marijuana may even improve lung function and capacity, giving you a leg up with aerobic exercise.

Medical Marijuana Can Help Treat Anxiety

Anxiety is more than just feeling nervousness and worry. It can be detrimental to your physical and mental health in a number of ways. Fortunately, this is another aspect of your health that marijuana can help to improve.

Although Louisiana does not recognize anxiety as a qualifying condition yet, many states do, and for good reason. However, the state does allow patients to get a Louisiana Marijuana Card for any debilitating condition if a physician believes a patient will benefit from it.

According to an article published by the American Psychological Association, studies have shown that patients “who used cannabis to treat a range of medical problems including anxiety, had largely improved cognitive performance, reduced clinical symptoms and anxiety-related symptoms as well as a reduced use of conventional medications, including opioids, benzodiazepines, and other mood stabilizers and antidepressants.”

You Can Lose Weight With Medical Marijuana

Unfortunately, one way Louisiana outpaces other states when it comes to healthcare is our high obesity rates. The Pelican State has the ninth highest adult obesity rate in the nation. In fact, about a third of us are officially obese.

So how can marijuana help you control weight gain? Well a study published in the American Journal of Medicine found that although marijuana users are likely to consume more calories than non-users, thanks to the munchies, they’re also likely to be skinnier than those non-users, and their bodies are able to metabolize sugars better.

As Dr. Gary Wenk, professor of neuroscience at Ohio State University, told Men’s Health, “Marijuana receptors live on your mitochondria, the power plants that give us energy. It turns out that they have THC receptors and they’re involved in regulating your energy use. What we speculate is that marijuana is getting in there and altering your ability to burn through calories, in spite of the munchies.”

Get Better Sleep With Medical Marijuana

You’re leaving yourself vulnerable to a wide range of health problems if you’re not getting enough sleep, including diminished immunity, a higher risk of heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Fortunately, the CBD in medical marijuana can help you put sleep problems behind you. According to the Sleep Foundation, “CBD can help with a number of sleep disorders, including insomnia, REM sleep behavior disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness disorder. Additional preliminary research suggests CBD can also help patients improve sleep and reduce anxiety.”

Cannabis May Help Control the Spread of Cancer

We saved for last what’s probably the most exciting aspect of cannabis’ ability to aid your overall health, and that’s its potential to treat cancer.

In fact, researchers at the California Pacific Medical Center say CBD may help prevent cancer from spreading. And according to Business Insider, other preliminary studies have indicated that THC and CBD can slow or shrink tumors in mice and cell cultures.

It’s important to note that these are studies in early stages of the research into marijuana and cancer, but the fact remains that the findings are very encouraging so far. As Business Insider said, these preliminary results are “a strong reason to do more research.”
