For patients dealing with persistent pain, finding a treatment that provides meaningful relief without difficult side effects can be challenging. As researchers continue to explore alternatives to traditional pain medications, a new cannabis-based treatment is gaining attention in the United States.

A new clinical trial is now investigating VER-01, an experimental medication derived from the cannabis plant that is being developed for chronic lower back pain.

The medication has already demonstrated promising results in European research, including studies comparing its effects with placebo and opioid-based treatments.

For Louisiana medical marijuana patients, the development highlights an important area of scientific research: whether carefully formulated cannabis-derived medications could eventually expand the available options for managing chronic pain.

Why Researchers Are Looking Beyond Traditional Pain Medications

Chronic pain affects people in different ways. For some, it can interfere with sleep, mobility, work, and everyday responsibilities. Others may experience ongoing discomfort despite trying several treatment approaches.

Common pain management strategies include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, injections, and prescription pain relievers.

Although these treatments can be beneficial, they do not provide sufficient relief for everyone.

Opioid medications also present challenges, including constipation, sedation, dependence, and the risk of overdose.

These concerns have encouraged researchers to investigate additional treatments that may help manage pain while potentially reducing certain medication-related risks.

One area of growing interest involves cannabinoids, the naturally occurring compounds found in marijuana.

What Makes VER-01 Different From Traditional Medical Marijuana?

VER-01 is a cannabis-derived medication developed by German pharmaceutical company Vertanical.

Unlike the medical marijuana products available at Louisiana dispensaries, VER-01 is being developed as a standardized pharmaceutical formulation.

This means researchers can administer controlled doses and evaluate how the medication affects patients under consistent clinical conditions.

The formulation contains several cannabinoids, including:

  • THC: Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main intoxicating component of marijuana and interacts with receptors involved in pain perception.

  • CBD: Cannabidiol is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid being studied for a variety of potential medical applications.

  • CBG: Cannabigerol is a lesser-known cannabinoid that researchers are investigating for possible therapeutic properties.

These compounds interact with the body's endocannabinoid system in different ways.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating several physiological processes, including pain signaling and sleep.

Researchers hope that studying specific cannabinoid combinations will help determine whether standardized cannabis-based medications can provide measurable benefits for certain medical conditions.

A New U.S. Clinical Trial Is Investigating VER-01

According to NORML's October 2026 report, researchers in western New York are participating in a clinical trial examining VER-01 for chronic lower back pain.

The study includes investigators at Upstate Clinical Research Associates in Williamsville, New York.

Researchers are evaluating the medication in patients experiencing persistent lower back pain, including individuals who have not obtained adequate relief from previous treatments.

The trial uses a placebo-controlled design to compare participants receiving VER-01 with those receiving an inactive treatment.

Investigators are examining whether the medication can reduce pain intensity, improve sleep and physical functioning, and demonstrate an acceptable safety profile.

The results could provide additional evidence about the medication's potential role in chronic pain treatment.

What Do Previous Clinical Trials Tell Us?

Before beginning additional research in the United States, VER-01 was evaluated in European clinical studies.

A Phase 3 study published in Nature Medicine examined the medication in 820 adults with chronic lower back pain.

Participants taking VER-01 experienced an average pain reduction of 1.9 points on an 11-point scale, compared with 1.4 points among participants receiving a placebo.

Researchers also identified improvements in certain measures of sleep, physical functioning, and quality of life.

A separate study published in Pain and Therapy compared VER-01 with opioid medications in 384 adults over six months.

The findings indicated slightly greater average improvements in pain and sleep among participants receiving VER-01, along with fewer reports of constipation.

These results are encouraging, but they do not establish that cannabis is a universally effective or safer replacement for opioid medications.

The studies evaluated one particular medication, and further research is needed to understand its long-term effectiveness, side effects, and potential risks.

Why This Research Is Relevant to Louisiana Medical Marijuana Patients

Louisiana has an established therapeutic marijuana program that allows eligible patients to obtain medical cannabis following a recommendation from an authorized clinician. Meaning any condition can qualify for treatment!

The state recognizes intractable pain as a medical condition for which therapeutic marijuana may be recommended.

Louisiana law also allows authorized clinicians to recommend medical marijuana for certain other debilitating medical conditions when the applicable legal and clinical requirements are met.

This makes research into cannabinoid-based pain treatments particularly relevant for Louisiana residents who are interested in exploring medical marijuana as part of their overall care.

However, there is an important distinction between an experimental pharmaceutical medication and the medical marijuana products currently available through Louisiana's regulated system.

VER-01 is manufactured with a standardized composition and evaluated under controlled clinical conditions.

Louisiana medical marijuana products can vary in cannabinoid concentration, formulation, and method of administration.

Therefore, results from VER-01 clinical trials cannot automatically predict how an individual will respond to products purchased at a Louisiana medical marijuana dispensary.

Patients should discuss their symptoms, medical history, current medications, and treatment goals with an authorized healthcare professional before using medical cannabis.

Is VER-01 Approved by the FDA?

Not yet.

VER-01 has received Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but it remains an investigational medication.

The designation is intended to help facilitate the development and review of medications that may provide substantial improvements over existing treatments for serious conditions.

It does not mean that the FDA has approved the medication for general use.

Additional clinical research and regulatory review are required before VER-01 could become an approved prescription treatment.

The medication is not currently available through Louisiana medical marijuana dispensaries.

How Does Louisiana's Medical Marijuana Program Work?

Louisiana's therapeutic marijuana program differs from medical marijuana programs in many other states.

Rather than requiring patients to obtain a traditional state-issued medical marijuana identification card, Louisiana generally uses a medical recommendation system.

Patients receive a recommendation from an authorized clinician and may then obtain approved medical cannabis products from a licensed Louisiana retailer.

Under Louisiana law, authorized clinicians may include qualifying physicians, nurse practitioners with prescriptive authority, and medical psychologists who meet the state's applicable requirements.

How to Get Medical Marijuana in Louisiana

Getting started with Louisiana's medical marijuana program begins with scheduling an appointment with a Louisiana medical marijuana doctor - that’s where we come in! During the evaluation, our marijuana doctor will learn about your medical history, ask about the symptoms you are experiencing, and determine whether a medical marijuana recommendation is appropriate.

At Louisiana Marijuana Card, the entire evaluation can be completed through telemedicine, so you can speak with a marijuana doctor from the comfort of your home. Our patient support team is also available to help you prepare for your appointment, answer questions, and guide you through the process.

If approved, you'll receive a Louisiana medical marijuana recommendation that allows you to purchase medical marijuana products from licensed Louisiana dispensaries. Your marijuana doctor will send your recommendation directly to the dispensary of your choice, making the process quick and convenient. In many cases, patients can get approved and access a dispensary on the very same day.

To purchase medical marijuana in Louisiana, you'll need an active medical marijuana recommendation and a valid government-issued photo ID. You do not need to print your recommendation, since licensed Louisiana dispensaries can verify your certification electronically once it has been submitted by your marijuana doctor. For patients who prefer to have something physical to carry, Louisiana Marijuana Card also offers personalized plastic patient cards, making it easier to keep your patient information readily available when visiting a dispensary.

Could Cannabis-Based Medications Become More Common in the Future?

The development of VER-01 illustrates how cannabis research is moving beyond general discussions about marijuana and toward studying specific pharmaceutical formulations.

By testing standardized cannabinoid combinations, researchers can more carefully evaluate effectiveness, dosage, tolerability, and safety.

For Louisiana patients, this research may contribute to a better understanding of the potential medical applications of cannabinoids.

However, important questions remain.

Researchers must continue investigating long-term safety, possible medication interactions, and which patients may benefit most from particular treatments.

Although VER-01 could eventually become another option for certain patients with chronic pain, it is too early to know whether it will receive FDA approval.
