Whether you're a new patient or renewing an existing certification, understanding Louisiana's medical marijuana process can help you navigate the steps to access licensed dispensaries

Unlike some states, Louisiana does not issue a physical medical marijuana card or require a separate state registration. Instead, your physician certification is sent directly to a licensed dispensary of your choice.

In this guide, we'll explain how to get your initial physician certification, what to expect after your appointment, how to track your certification, and when to renew it.

How to Get Your Louisiana Medical Marijuana Certification

Getting started with Louisiana Marijuana Card is a straightforward process. You can complete your appointment online and, if approved, have your physician certification sent to your selected dispensary.

Step 1: Schedule Your Appointment

Book your appointment online through Louisiana Marijuana Card or call (833) 253-2943. Telemedicine allows you to meet with a marijuana doctor from the comfort of your home.

Step 2: Complete Your Patient Intake Form

Before your appointment, complete the required patient intake form and submit any requested documentation. Having your information ready can help your marijuana doctor better understand your medical history and needs. If you need assistance obtaining your records, our team can help you gather the necessary medical documentation before your appointment.

Step 3: Meet With Your Marijuana Doctor

During your online appointment, your marijuana doctor will discuss your health concerns, medical history, and symptoms to determine whether medical marijuana may be appropriate for you. In Louisiana, an authorized marijuana doctor can consider a patient's condition or symptoms when determining eligibility.

Step 4: Receive Your Physician Certification

If approved, your physician certification will be sent to your selected dispensary. You'll receive an email with your After Visit Summary and confirmation that your certification has been faxed.

Louisiana does not issue a traditional physical medical marijuana card. Your physician certification is what allows you to access medical marijuana through a licensed dispensary.

Step 5: Wait for Dispensary Confirmation

The dispensary will contact you by phone or text to arrange your purchase. Wait for the dispensary to contact you before visiting, and bring a valid government-issued photo ID when you go.

Once the dispensary has confirmed your visit, you can complete the purchasing process without needing a separate state registration card.

What Happens After Your Louisiana Medical Marijuana Appointment?

After your marijuana doctor approves your certification, there are a few important steps to complete before visiting a dispensary.

Step 1: Check Your Email

During your appointment, let your marijuana doctor know which dispensary you want to use so your certification can be sent to the correct location. After approval, you'll receive an email with your After Visit Summary and confirmation that your certification has been faxed to your selected dispensary. Keep this email for your records and review the instructions for what to do next.

Step 2: Wait for the Dispensary to Contact You

The dispensary will contact you by phone or text to arrange a date and time for your visit.

Do not visit the dispensary until you receive a call or text from them. Even if your physician has approved your certification, you must wait for the dispensary to contact you.

Step 3: Bring a Valid Photo ID

Once your dispensary has arranged your visit, bring a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or state ID. A valid photo ID is required to enter the dispensary.

What If You Need Your Certification Sent to a Different Dispensary?

If you need your certification sent to another location after it has already been faxed, contact the original dispensary first. Its staff can explain the steps needed to redirect your certification.

If you need a letter confirming your approval, contact Louisiana Marijuana Card. You'll need to complete a Protected Health Information (PHI) form and specify who the letter is for and what information it should include.

How Long Is a Louisiana Medical Marijuana Certification Valid?

Louisiana medical marijuana certifications must be renewed annually. Keeping track of your expiration date helps you plan your next appointment and avoid interruptions in access.

You can check your patient portal to review your certification information and keep track of your expiration date. If you're unsure when your certification expires, contact our team for assistance.

At Louisiana Marijuana Card, we recommend scheduling your renewal 1–2 weeks before your certification expires. Existing patients can also watch for renewal reminders from our team.

How to Renew Your Louisiana Medical Marijuana Certification

Renewing your certification involves completing another evaluation with an authorized marijuana doctor. Here's how to prepare.

Step 1: Schedule Your Renewal Appointment

Book a telemedicine appointment with Louisiana Marijuana Card. Our online evaluations let you meet with a marijuana doctor without traveling to a physical office.

Remember to schedule your renewal 1–2 weeks before your current certification expires. If you're an existing Louisiana Marijuana Card patient, our team will also send you renewal reminders to help you stay on track.

Step 2: Prepare for Your Appointment

Gather any documentation you may need for your appointment, including a valid photo ID and relevant medical records. If you need help obtaining your records or locating information about a previous certification completed outside our team, we’re here to help.

Complete any required pre-appointment forms in your patient portal and contact our team at (833) 253-2943 if you have questions.

Step 3: Complete Your Evaluation

During your telemedicine appointment, the marijuana doctor will review your medical history and current needs to determine whether an updated certification is appropriate. Renewals are not automatic; your marijuana doctor must determine whether you continue to qualify.

Step 4: Check Your Email and Wait for the Dispensary

If your marijuana doctor approves your certification, you'll receive an email with your after-visit summary and confirmation that your certification was faxed to your selected dispensary.

The dispensary will then contact you by phone or text to arrange your purchase. Wait for that communication before visiting, and remember to bring a valid photo ID.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're applying for your first Louisiana medical marijuana certification or renewing an existing one, understanding the process can help you prepare. Schedule your appointment, gather any necessary documentation, and check your patient portal after your appointment for your certification details and expiration date.

Remember that physician approval is only one part of the process. After your certification is faxed to your selected dispensary, wait for the dispensary to call or text you before visiting.

Louisiana Marijuana Card is here to help you navigate your evaluation and understand your next steps.
