Cannabis Vape Cartridges & How to Use Them

Louisiana’s medical marijuana program offers an expansive list of cannabis products for patients to choose from.

Qualified patients can choose from cannabis flower, edibles, concentrates, topicals, and vape cartridges at approved Louisiana pharmacies.

Vape cartridges are one of the most convenient and portable ways to consume cannabis, and they’re one of the most popular cannabis products you can buy.

Vape cartridges come in many different strain types, flavors, and potencies, and patients looking to vaporize their cannabis often look to vape cartridges first.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about vape cartridges and how to use them!

What Are Cannabis Vape Cartridges?

Vape Cartridges Are Concentrates in Pre-Made Containers

Vaporizer cartridges, or “vape carts”, are a type of cannabis concentrate (typically distillate) that has been pre-loaded into a container and installed onto a battery for use.

Vape carts can come in any strain and at any potency level, though typically you’ll find most vape carts range from 60% - 90%+ THC.

Typically, the containers are around .5mg – 1mg and are installed onto a pen-style vape battery that can be used until the container is empty. Vape carts are used by inhaling the vapor produced from the battery/container combo, similar to an e-cigarette or tobacco vape.

In some cases, manufacturers make battery+pod containers for an all-in-one device, though the most common type of cartridge is a 510-threaded container that can be installed onto most vape batteries.

Different Types of Vape Cartridges

Just like cannabis flower, there are several different types of vape cartridges.

The most common types of vape carts are:

Regular Vape Cart – Usually made by using C02 oil or BHO ; the most common type of vape cart

Full-Spectrum Vape Cart – Higher terpene content, better flavor

Live Resin Vape Cart – The most popular vape cartridge option ; typically offers the best flavor, often C02

Live Rosin Vape Cart – Relatively new product using rosin instead of BHO or C02

The vape cartridges you’ll find at Louisiana pharmacies will mostly be regular vape carts, which are made using C02 or BHO distillate. Good Day Farm does produce full spectrum and live resin carts in other markets, so they may become available in Louisiana soon.

Live rosin carts are hard to come by in the South, though they’re favored for their improved flavor and cleaner production method.

How to Use Vape Cartridges

Get Yourself a Battery First!

Before you use your vape cart, you’ll need to have a battery to install it on.

In some cases, you’ll be able to find batteries at pharmacies, though any vape store will have a 510-threaded vape battery.

There are plenty of options to choose from, with some offering custom features like voltage, amperage, or wattage settings. You’ll be perfectly fine with just a traditional pen battery with or without a power button.

Once you have a battery, be sure to charge it before your first use as most batteries don’t come with a full charge.

To install your cartridge onto the batter, simply screw it into the connector and it’s ready to go!

If your vape battery comes with a fire button, you’ll need to press the button to heat the oil, otherwise you can simply inhale to heat the device and draw the vapor into your lungs.

How to Dose Cannabis Vape Cartridges

If it’s your first experience with concentrates or products other than cannabis flower, try to find a vape cartridge with the lowest THC content possible.

Vape carts come with significantly higher amounts of THC than cannabis flower, though the way you dose them can mitigate many of the stronger effects.

To dose cannabis vape cartridges, begin with a single, small draw from the pen and inhale the vapor similar to smoking.

Allow 30-45 minutes for the effects to finish occurring, and if you need a stronger hit, take two draws and repeat until you find the minimum effective dosage.

Effects typically begin within 15 minutes and tend to last around 30 minutes to an hour depending on your tolerance.

Vape cartridges typically offer a slightly different “high” than traditional cannabis flower. Many people find this to be a lighter high, though because of the higher THC content, it’s easy to go overboard.

Dosing vape cartridges is like any cannabis product, so simply start with the lowest dose possible and slowly work your way up until you’ve found a comfortable place!
