Does Marijuana Use Prevent You From Giving Blood?

Giving blood is a quick and easy thing you can do to help save numerous lives. But, does cannabis use make the blood tainted in any way? Can a frequent marijuana user donate blood?

Since marijuana is still technically a federally illegal substance, this is a very valid concern. The demand for blood is increasing, and anyone who is eligible should donate blood as an easy way to help others.

Technically, as long as cannabis consumers are not impaired at the time they are giving blood, they will be allowed to make a contribution. The American Red Cross does not test blood samples for THC.

The only way marijuana use would disqualify a person from giving blood is if they are noticeably impaired during the time of the blood draw. The bottom line is that cannabis users are eligible to give blood as long as they are not noticeably high.

According to the American Red Cross, ““While the Red Cross does not encourage the use of controlled substances, marijuana or alcohol use does not necessarily disqualify you from giving blood as long as you are feeling well. If you have EVER injected any illegal drugs, you can never give blood.”

Things That Will Disqualify You From Donating Blood

Cannabis users are eligible to donate blood, but there are many other things that can make a person ineligible. Here is a list of factors that may disqualify a person from donating blood:

-You must be 16 years old or older and must weigh at least 110 pounds

-You cannot have any type of blood-borne virus

-Certain cancers or history of cancers may disqualify you

-If you have had a blood transfusion in the last 3 months, you cannot donate

-You cannot be pregnant or nursing

-You cannot be ill or have low iron

-You cannot be on antibiotics

What About Nicotine?

Nicotine and tobacco also do not disqualify you from blood donation. However, blood banks will normally request that you refrain from using nicotine products for a few hours before you give blood.

Nicotine contains harmful chemicals that can affect a person’s blood, so it’s best to not use any nicotine at all the day you donate blood.
