Are Our Beloved Bees Doing OK?
Out of the hundreds of thousands of species of bees on this planet, humans have chosen to have a relationship with the honeybee and this relationship has proven to be a vital one. Honeybees have given us not only delicious honey that we all know and love but also healthy crops worldwide!
If you are following any recent news sources, it should come to no surprise to you that the honeybees are in deep trouble right now. Sadly, they are dying at an unsustainable, plummeting rate. This should be extremely alarming to humans as the bees are responsible for pollinating almost every crop on earth. The bees provide us with some of our favorite things from the apples and coffee in our kitchen to the fresh flowers on our coffee table. So many wonderful things around us are due to our friends, the honeybees.
If the bees went extinct, the impact on our food production would be catastrophic and would net in a financial loss of hundreds of billions, yes billions, of dollars per year! So do we really need bees? Japan recently tested this theory by using drones to pollinate flowers. The results did not yield success which leads us to the cold, hard facts: we cannot do the job of the honeybees!
How Can Cannabis Help Save The Bees?
As the years go by, legalization of recreational and medical cannabis advances and studies are showing that this could be fantastic news for our beloved bees!
A new study from Cornell University revealed humans and bees have more in common than we thought; they love cannabis too! Cannabis pollen actually provides the bees with a lot of nutritional value. The study showed that the bees were seventeen times more attracted to male cannabis plants over female plants due to them being taller with more foliage.
This is good news for us and the bees! While male cannabis plants do not produce bud or flower like female cannabis plants do, they do, however, produce pollen. So even though the bees are not getting the same “buzz” we do from cannabis, they are getting their pollination job done!
What can I do to help save the bees?
Below are some tips for you to do your part in saving the honeybees and protecting our environment:
Stop using pesticides and go for a more organic, natural alternative like cayenne pepper.
Put a fountain or birdbath in your yard with rocks exposed so that bees can have a safe place to land and drink.
When spring comes and the dandelions start sprouting, don’t pull them but leave them for the bees.
Plant a garden in your yard or plant some trees so bees can get their nectar.
