How to Make Cannabis Tinctures

Louisiana offers access to medical marijuana for patients with a qualifying condition who have a medical marijuana certification.

Patients can purchase many different cannabis products at approved Louisiana pharmacies, such as cannabis flower, edibles, and tinctures.

Tinctures are liquid extracts designed to be taken orally, providing an effective and quick dose of THC.

And although you can buy tinctures at Louisiana pharmacies, many patients choose to make their own. In this article, we’ll show you how to make your own cannabis tinctures at home!

How to Make Your Own Cannabis Tinctures at Home - the Easy Way

Ingredients for Making a Cannabis Tincture

The first step in making a cannabis tincture is to have a few key ingredients.

To make a cannabis tincture you’ll need:

· 1/8th oz Cannabis Flower

· 1/2 cup of cooking oil (olive oil, coconut oil, etc.)

· Baking Tray

· Baking Paper

· Strainer

· Saucepan

The dosage will vary depending on the strength and amount of cannabis you use, so be sure to find the right dosage for you.

For example, cannabis flower has around 1,000mg of cannabinoids, so 1 gram of flower with 20% THC would have around 200mg of THC.

If you use an 8th of cannabis flower with 25% THC, you’ll wind up with around 875mg of THC. And if you only use a small amount of cooking oil, you’ll end up with a potent THC extract.

Decarboxylate and Active Your THC

Just like making your own cannabutter, you need to decarboxylate your cannabis for it to be activated in the oil.

Grind up your cannabis and spread it onto a baking tray lined with baking paper. Preheat your oven to 240°F.

Pro Tip: Cannabis that has been vaporized is already primed to be used for edibles or tinctures. If you save your whole plant material after vaporizing, you can skip the decarboxylation process.

Let the cannabis sit in the oven for approximately 30 – 45 minutes, agitating every 10 minutes or so.

The cannabis will turn to a light brown or yellow color, and when the timer hits, remove the tray to sit until the cannabis is cooled to room temperature.

Making a Cannabis Tincture With Cooking Oil

Mix Oil and Decarbed Cannabis

Add your decarboxylated cannabis to the amount of cooking oil you’re going to use into a saucepan on low temperature.

Keep the saucepan on low heat for around three hours, stirring regularly. Be sure not to let the cannabis burn while in the saucepan, as very low heat is required. It should never reach higher than 235°F.

After three hours, your oil should be ready to be strained and stored in an airtight container for around 3 weeks. Keep your container in a dark, cold, and dry environment to prevent mold from accumulating.

You can use your tincture before the three weeks is up, though it won’t reach its potency for a few weeks at minimum. You can also shake the jar each day to make sure the plant material stays covered in oil.

How to Dose Cannabis Tinctures

Depending on the amount of cannabis flower and the THC content, you can end up with some fairly potent tinctures by making them at home.

As always, it’s best to start with the lowest dose possible, such as one or two drops from a bottle-dropper. Let the tincture sit under your tongue for 20-30 seconds and swallow for the best results. Or, you can add a few drops of tincture to your food or drink.

When taken under the tongue, tinctures typically begin taking effect within 5 – 25 minutes, though your biology will play the biggest factor in determining when tinctures begin producing effects.

It’s best to wait around 1 – 2 hours before taking another dose to avoid overconsumption, especially when it comes to homemade cannabis products.

Making cannabis tinctures at home is incredibly simple and safe, and patients may find that making their own tinctures is more cost effective than purchasing them at pharmacies.
